Madonna del Sasso Church

Madonna Del Sasso Church was formed in Salinas in 1959. The current pastor is Rev. Gregory Sandman and today it serves over 3,000 families. They offer a number of ministries including youth and young adult ministries, Altar Servers, Angela’s Angels, Grupo de Crecimiento, an Environment Committee and many more.

About the Green Churches Initiative

Inspired by Pope Francis’ message of environmental stewardship in his encyclical Laudato Si, Greenpower began our Green Churches Initiative in 2016 in collaboration with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey of California and Santa Cruz-based energy efficiency and solar experts Mynt Systems. Our goal is to transform Diocese churches and schools into beacons of sustainable energy production by installing renewable energy systems like solar as well as energy efficiency measures like LED lighting retrofits. Not only will this help protect the environment, it will help save the Diocese millions of dollars that can be used for education and charitable ministries.

Proposal Completed

Mynt presented a project proposal to Madonna del Sasso Church that outlined how they could reduce their electric bill by 90% while saving them over $2,000 in the first year and up to $450,000 by year 25. These energy savings will prevent over 750,000 lbs of carbon from being released into the atmosphere over the next 25 years, equivalent to planting nearly 9,000 trees or driving around the Earth 33 times!

Energy Assessment Completed

On September 28, 2016, Mynt Systems visited Madonna del Sasso Church and assessed their appliances, light fixtures, heating and ventilation, and roof space to begin analyzing their energy use patterns and put together an effective and personalized energy efficiency and solar system project proposal.

Energy Assessment Scheduled

Madonna del Sasso Church has taken the next step in moving forward with implementing solar and energy efficiency at their properties by scheduling Mynt Systems to perform a full audit of their appliances, light fixtures, heating and ventilation, and roof space for energy efficiency retrofits and solar on September 28, 2016.

First Steps

Madonna del Sasso Church sent representatives to a Greenpower presentation on August 11, 2016 at Sacred Heart Church, where they learned about the Green Churches initiative from the Catholic Diocese of Monterey, Mynt Systems, and the Romero Institute, and how they could drastically reduce their electricity bills while answering Pope Francis’ call for environmental stewardship.
