San Carlos Cathedral

San Carlos Cathedral was formed in Carmel, CA in 1770 by Father Junipero Serra, who is renowned for founding the first nine missions in California, and is the oldest continuously operating church as well as the first stone building in California. Bishop Richard Garcia and Reverend Emil Robu currently preside there. San Carlos offers classes for children in kindergarten through eighth grade, and have a Heritage Center which features items found during an archaeological dig, like pieces of the whale-bone sidewalk that at one point led to the Church. They offer a number of ministries including a food pantry, adult confirmation, a young adults ministry, a music ministry, and many more.

About the Green Churches Initiative

Inspired by Pope Francis’ message of environmental stewardship in his encyclical Laudato Si, Greenpower began our Green Churches Initiative in 2016 in collaboration with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey of California and Santa Cruz-based energy efficiency and solar experts Mynt Systems. Our goal is to transform Diocese churches and schools into beacons of sustainable energy production by installing renewable energy systems like solar as well as energy efficiency measures like LED lighting retrofits. Not only will this help protect the environment, it will help save the Diocese millions of dollars that can be used for education and charitable ministries.

Proposal Completed

Mynt presented a project proposal to St. John the Baptist Church that outlined how they could reduce their electric bill by nearly 90% while saving them more than $3,000 in the first year, and up to nearly $325,000 over 25 years. These energy savings will prevent more than 530,000 lbs of carbon from being released into the atmosphere over the next 25 years, equivalent to planting 6,200 trees or driving around the Earth 23 times!

Energy Assessment Completed

On September 27, 2016, Mynt Systems visited San Carlos Cathedral and assessed their appliances, light fixtures, heating and ventilation, and roof space to begin analyzing their energy use patterns and put together an effective and personalized energy efficiency and solar system project proposal.

Energy Assessment Scheduled

San Carlos Cathedral has taken the next step in embracing energy efficiency and solar by scheduling Mynt Systems to perform a full audit of their appliances, light fixtures, heating and ventilation, and roof space for energy efficiency retrofits and solar on September 27, 2016.

First Steps

San Carlos Cathedral had representatives talk with a Greenpower representative on August 26, 2016 over the phone. During this call they learned about the Green Churches Initiative from the Catholic Diocese of Monterey, Mynt Systems, and the Romero Institute, and how they could drastically reduce their electricity bills while answering Pope Francis’ call for environmental stewardship.
