St. Michael's Catholic Church
About the Green Churches InitiativeInspired by Pope Francis’ message of environmental stewardship in his encyclical Laudato Si, Greenpower began our Green Churches Initiative in 2016 in collaboration with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey of California and Santa Cruz-based energy efficiency and solar experts Mynt Systems. Our goal is to transform Diocese churches and schools into beacons of sustainable energy production by installing renewable energy systems like solar as well as energy efficiency measures like LED lighting retrofits. Not only will this help protect the environment, it will help save the Diocese millions of dollars that can be used for education and charitable ministries.
Construction CompletedConstruction has been completed as of January 2017, when their 5 kW solar system was installed on the church roof and a complete LED lighting retrofit was performed that improved energy efficiency and lighting quality throughout the church, community hall, and rectory.
Proposal CompletedMynt presented a project proposal to St. Michael’s that outlined how they could reduce their electric bill by more than 95% while saving them $400 in the first year and achieve savings of more than $120,000 over the next 25 years. These energy savings will prevent 140,000 lbs of carbon from being released into the atmosphere over the next 25 years, equivalent to planting nearly 1,500 trees or driving around the Earth 5 ½ times!
Energy Assessment CompletedOn September 12, 2016 Mynt Systems visited the property and assessed their appliances, light fixtures, heating and ventilation, and roof space to begin analyzing their energy use patterns and put together a personalized energy efficiency and solar system project proposal.
Energy Assessment ScheduledSt. Michael’s has taken the next step and begun the process of moving forward with implementing solar and energy efficiency at their property by scheduling Mynt Systems to perform a full audit of their appliances, light fixtures, heating and ventilation, and roof space for energy efficiency retrofits and solar on September 12, 2016.
First StepsGreenpower met with Fr. Robert Murrin at St. Michael’s on June 14, 2016, where he learned about the Green Churches initiative from the Catholic Diocese of Monterey, Mynt Systems, and the Romero Institute, and how he could dramatically reduce his parish’s electricity bills while answering Pope Francis’ call for environmental stewardship.
